Therapy of the Month: Aromatherapy

There is a wonderful world of alternative therapies. This month, we shine a light on Aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy, also known as Essential Oil therapy, is the art and science of using the natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to balance and harmonize your body and your mind.

The inhaled aroma from these “essential” oils is widely believed to stimulate brain function. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream and can promote whole-body healing. As part of alternative medicine, aromatherapy is gaining momentum. It is used for a variety of applications, including pain relief, mood enhancement and increased cognitive function. There are a wide number of essential oils available, each with its own healing properties. The aromatherapy massage combined with the benefits of essential oils is a perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life. It is a full body relaxation massage. This massage will bring blissfulness to your back, the front and back of your legs, your feet, your arms and your chest. This treatment will totally relax you and help drive out tensions.

At Make Me Feel, Marie Lardy is an Aromatherapist who graduated from Asia-Pacific Aromatherapy (APDHA Hong-Kong) with an internationally recognized diploma in holistic aromatherapy and professional full member of IFPA (the International Federation for Professional Aromatherapists). She gives consultations every Thursday from 9:30am to 1:30pm and can recommend a particular combination of oils to suit your needs. She also provides aromatherapy massages.

Winter skin booster

Falling temperatures, central heating and lower air humidity can all affect our skin, leaving it vulnerable to dehydration and sensitivity. Skin appear flaky, uneven and dull and can feel tight and dry. What to do? You should change your skincare routine and provide your skin with extra moisture and attention. Here are my 5 must-have products to keep your skin glowing as the days get darker.

 Winter skin buster #1: Exfoliation

Ren Micro Polish Cleaner

Exfoliating is the key to a brighter complexion. To allow good quality products to penetrate the skin, you should exfoliate once a week. Ren Micro Polish Cleanser is the perfect product! This potent two-in-one foaming formula cleanses deeply as it kick-starts exfoliation, helping to diminish the appearance of pores and wrinkles. Skin is left perfectly polished, purified and bright.

Winterskin buster #2: Moisturising

Ren Hydro Boost Plumping Emulsion

A suitable moisturizer can help prevent and treat dry skin. It can protect sensitive skin, improve skin tone and texture and mask imperfections. Ren Hydro Boost Plumping Emulsion is a really special product that delivers exceptional results from the very first use. Skin is instantly plumped and regains a fuller, smoother appearance. Long term, skin is protected from the ageing effects of dehydration. Apply onto cleansed face and neck. Use daily before moisturizer, as part of usual routine.

Winter skin buster #3 : Facial Oil

Pai Rosehip BioRegenerate Face Oil

Nothing’s more useful in winter than a good quality facial oil. This Pai Rosehip BioRengerate Face Oil is rich in Omegas and help regenerate skin without irritation. It will help repair and protect your skin, improving firmness and elasticity, combats fine lines and scars promoting a clear, even skin tone. Apply 2-3 drops to the palm of your hand and use fingertips to gently massage into clean, slightly damp skin on face or body. For best results, I recommend using oils at night before bed and creams in the morning.

Winter skin buster #4 : Face mask

Nuxe Crème Fraîchede Beauté Mask

The right face mask can help hydrate skin, remove excess oils and help improve the appearance of your pores. French cult brand Nuxe has excelled with this intensely moisturising skin treat. This mask provides intensive relief, soothing skin discomfort and maintaining hydration for up to 24 hours.

Winter skin buster #5 : Lip Balm

Papaya Gold Paw Paw Balm

Papaya Gold Moisturising Balm enriched with Bio Active Manuka Honey 20+ is a topical balm that soothes, relieves and moisturises dry, sensitive, chaffed and irritated skin and dry chapped lips. Apply whenever your skin is feeling dry.

Eight Ways to Relax and Boost Your Immune System

As January has brought us viruses, cold and coughs, fatigue and stress, we would like to help and support you with a few tips for fighting those shades of grey and boost your immune system:

1.     Eat a healthy balanced diet

Yes, I know you hear this everywhere but it is true.

The most important way to boost your immune system is a varied healthy diet. An eating plan rich in fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins will defend your body against germs. The 3 best vitamins to boost your immune system are:

  • Vitamin C: Foods rich in vitamin C include oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, strawberries, bell peppers, spinach, kale and broccoli.
  • Vitamin B6 is vital to supporting biochemical reactions in the immune system.  Vitamin B6-rich foods include chicken and cold water fish such as salmon and tuna. Vitamin B6 is also found in green vegetables and in chick peas, which is the main ingredient in hummus.
  • Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps the body fight off infection. Foods rich in vitamin E include nuts, seeds and spinach.

2. Take a walk

Exercise is a great way to strengthen your body, mind, and immune system. However, not everyone has time to go to the gym for two hours a day or play sports regularly. A 10-minute brisk walk every day or 20-30minutes of mild to moderate physical activity is good enough to bolster the immune system.

3. Body & Mind rely on sleep

Sleep is absolutely essential for your health and has a profound impact on your stress levels, immune function and disease resistance. Long-term sleep loss can also result in heart disease, stroke, hypertension, depression and anxiety. Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Remember rest and relaxation go hand in hand. At Make Me Feel, we are also here to advise you on your sleep and to give you the best tips and advice.

Next month, The Make Me Feel newsletter will focus on sleeping and how to beautifully break those old, unwanted routines.

We will also organise workshops during March in partnership with WeSleep! www.wesleep.co.uk

4. Laughing is the best medicine

Laughing gets your heart racing to nearly the same levels as when you exercise and that helps keep your body in good shape. But laughter also reduces stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. So watch a funny film, go to a comedy show, and engage in activities that make you laugh to increase your immune function and disease resistance.

It is definitely one of our favourite advice at Make me feel!

5.  Drink Less alcohol

Alcohol can weaken the immune system. Alcohol produces an overall nutritional deficiency and prevents nutrients from feeding your immune system. Excessive alcohol can reduce the ability of white cells to kill germs. If you have a drinking habit, try to start limiting your consumption. An occasional drink is fine (especially with bubbles)! but keep it limited.

6. Take time for a relaxing massage

Relaxing massages bring new life to your body.

Did you know that Make Me Feel offers different types of massages: Aromatherapy, India Head, Relaxing and Deep Tissue Massages. For both men and women.

It will be hard to choose!

7. The health benefit of Probiotics

Probiotics are good bacterias that help your digestive system to absorb as many nutrients as possible, giving your immune system energy to keep you from getting sick. There are plenty of probiotics available on the market and some are specialised in boosting your immune system effectively. We are proud to stock a wide variety of well-known and highly recommended ranges including Solgar , Biocare, Biokult, Optibac and the micronutrition pioneer Pileje.

8. Garlic: The immunity-boosting superstar

Garlic is an immune system booster thanks to its antiseptic, anti-fungal and nutritive properties.

It is a natural detoxifying agent, protecting against bacterial and viral infections. Moreover Garlic has been shown to fight stress and reduce your level of fatigue.

Marine’s Product of the Month

Each month we will feature a product that really stands out and excels.

I heard so many good things on social media and also had a lot of great feedback from customers regarding the magnesium range from better you. So I thought: let’s have a try!

Reviews are stating that it is brilliant as a recovery treatment for muscle aches after sport but even better for a good night’s sleep.

After all, it is to be expected that you may need to boost your magnesium intake if you suffer from headaches and migraines, poor skin condition, low energy levels (particularly mid-morning and afternoon), poor sleep patterns or cramps. It is also very true that magnesium is more effectively absorbed through our skin rather than taken orally!

I have used it at night for 2 weeks now and so far I am delighted by the results. Very smooth skin and no more muscular aches. I could not tell much concerning my sleep as I don’t really have problem!

I have also tried the magnesium bath flakes and for a bath addict like me, that is a must!

The best essential oils to boost our immune system through winter time

This month, Marie is focusing on the best essential oils to boost our immune system through winter time.

Ravintsara (cinnamomum camphora) contains lots of 1.8 cineole. This is an anti-infectious, antiviral, expectorant, anti-tussive essential oil and a powerful immune stimulant. It can be use in diffuser, or topically on the chest with carrier base oil (5 drops for 5 ml). Rubbing under the feet would also be a good option.

Bergamot (citrus bergamia) is top oil for the immune system. Antiseptic, antibacterial, antidepressant, boosting white blood cells, it is an uplifting essential oil.  As it is phototoxic (containing bergaptene), it should not exceed 2 drops for 20 ml base oil topically if going to the sun. Can be use in diffuser, or massage locally.

A synergy of 2 to 3 essential oils is the most beneficial way to use them and to get rid of viruses and protect our body.

One example of recipe (use in inhalation with a diffuser or in hot water):
–    3 drops EO Lemon
–    7 drops EO Bergamot FFC
–    10 drops EO Ravintsara

Inhale 10 min every 4 hours if needed.

Always be cautious when using oils for the first time.

Please contact us for a usage during pregnancy and for children under 6 years old. We will be more than happy to help and discuss your particular requirements !

Stay warm and safe!
