Acute sinusitis occurs most often following an ENT (rhinopharyngitis) or dental (caries or abscess) infection. It causes inflammation blocking communication between the sinuses and nasal passages. The mucus can no longer flow and the pressure in the sinuses increases. Chronic sinusitis is when the inflammation lasts for more than three months. There are two main causes of chronic sinusitis: on the one hand, infections by bacteria, on the other hand, polyps.
